7 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Car GetMyAuto

Most drivers would prefer for their car to last as long as possible—and that’s not something you have to leave to chance. With the right maintenance and upkeep, you can keep your vehicle running for many, many miles.

Here are just some of the things you can do to extend the lifespan of your vehicle.

Extending the Life of Your Vehicle

  1. Get your oil changed regularly. There’s simply nothing more foundational to proper vehicle care. To find out how often you need your oil changed, consult the owner’s manual. For most drivers, it will be at least two or three times a year.
  2. In addition to oil, there are other fluids for you to keep up with—including transmission fluid, radiator coolant, brake fluid, and more. Keep an eye on these fluid levels and make sure you top them off whenever needed. Routine maintenance visits at your local service station can help you keep these levels in check.
  3. Swap out your oil and air filters on a regular basis, as well. Over time, they become clogged with dust, debris, and sediment, which keeps them from doing their job properly. Have them changed whenever you have your oil changed.
  4. Rotate your tires, which helps ensure even wear. Once again, this is something you can do whenever you take your vehicle in for an oil change and other routine maintenance.
  5. Something else you can do to keep your car in good working order is simply to keep it clean. A clean car is usually a well-maintained car and taking a few minutes every month to clean the upholstery, scrub the exteriors, and vacuum the floorboards can really go a long way.
  6. Have repairs made as needed. If you take your car to the shop for regular upkeep and you’re advised to have some additional work done, do it. Putting it off will generally just make things worse.
  7. Finally, spend some time reading your owner’s manual, where you can get some car-specific tips on maintenance and upkeep. The better you know your vehicle, the more able you’ll be to give it the TLC it requires!
